Seward

Tuesday morning we drove about 120 miles south of Anchorage across the Kenai Penninsula to Seward. This is a seaport town located just north of Kenai Fjords National Park on Prince William Sound. We had some fabulous fish and chips and chowder at Ray's.

The view from our table was the small boat harbor (as opposed to the Cruise Ship harbor which lucky for us was empty!).

The Alaska Sea Life Center is here. (It was a beautiful day - mid 60's with sun -unusually clear for Seward)

There are lots of rescued birds here including these Puffins. Puffins live almost exclusively in Siberia and Alaska.

.

This is "Skittle". He is a 6 month old Sea Otter pup rescued by the center. He was adorable. Did you know that sea otters have the thickest fur of any mammal? Seals have fur that keeps them dry but they rely on blubber to keep them warm. Otters do not have blubber and rely on their fur which they groom and blow air into to keep them warm. They have approximately 1 million hairs per square inch which means you cannot part the fur and see the skin at all. This is some really soft fur! We didn't know any of this either!

It was feeding time for Skittle and we watched him roll around on the water getting his food.

They also have sea lions here as well as seals and many other fish and birds.

The view from here isn't bad either!

We had fun checking out the picturesque main street area of downtown. We found cold Mountain Dew and homemade fudge. What more do you need????

  1. I lived my life for the most part in southern California - yuk! Concrete jungle. In January of this year, I moved to the state of Washington, so it's a little cooler, and a lot greener. But I've always wanted to go all the way north to Alaska, where it's really cold, and you live on the edge of the wilderness. Great photos; keep at it.
