Exit Glacier

Just outside Seward is the Exit Glacier. About a 1.5 mile hike from the visitor center, you get to the edge of Exit Glacier.

Why do I think Carson had nothing to do with this???? This is a close as you can get to the side of the ice. We are up significantly from the toe (bottom) of the glacier.

Looking up at the ice, the color is impressive. So is the cold air coming from it and the massive size! Leaving the glacier, you can see how the ice has scraped these grooves into the granite. WOW!
Tucker really wanted to go to the toe where we could touch the ice. So, down we went to pick up the other trail.
Arriving at the toe area, we found streams of ice cold water between us and the ice. Looking back after Tucker and I had forded the stream on the rocks, I saw Cole and Carson stranded on an isle. I think they were saying "how did they get over there" - "there has to be a better way".
" Have you guys found a way across without getting wet??? "

Just make a run for it! And so we did. We ran through the ankle deep streams and got to the ice.

That's Cole on top of the moraine (see the Matanuska glacier post for a full discussion of moraine. Hint: it's not white, and has nothing to do with pie).

Looking up the side of the glacier at the edge as it moves through the rock.

After squishing back down the trail to the "gray whale" in our icy cold, wet shoes and socks, we changed and headed down the road to the Resurrection Roadhouse for dinner on the patio with a great view. (All of us changed except Terry, who's sandals were not in the van. He gets the good sport award for wearing his wet shoes and socks til after dinner when we headed back up the road for home.)

Don't believe our kids when they tell you we never feed them on vacation!

We were greeted at home with this quasi-daylight sunset at midnight. It looks much darker than it really ever is. Notice how blue the sky is.

And on the other side of the house, the moon in a bright blue sky.
