Moose in the Marsh at Midnight

Fourth of July evening the skies were hazy and light. We returned from Girdwood and about 11:30 p.m. decided to go over to Potter's Marsh and see what was out. It's about a 5 minute drive from the house.

Walking out on the boardwalk from the parking lot, Tucker kept saying "shhh I hear something, there's something out here." Sure enough, just to our left in heavy brush about 15 ft away from us was a female moose. She was eating and not paying any attention to us. I'll apologize now, the light was not optimal (it was about midnight), and the moose just kept moving around mostly further into the brush (not a good thing with a long exposure time used to compensate for the light) but it was pretty cool and here are the best pics.

At this point, everyone else had retreated to the van and I was being dive bombed by mosquitos the size of birds (this is basically a swamp we are standing over). I just wanted one picture of her face! This is as good as it got before I had to get out of there! We'll go back when we are wearing mosquito nets or at least pants and long sleeves with a dousing of Off.

For us, this was better than fireworks! Especially in the daylight.
